1. Art and Science of Clinical Medicine Course
2. Mechanisms, Manifestations and Management of Disease (MMMD)This is a problem-based learning course that spans 21 weeks and involves all of the major clinical disciplines. Each week is characterized by a "case of the week", problem-based learning tutorials and a small number of lectures and seminars. There are 2 1/2 weeks for which Paediatrics is responsible, but some additional cases in which paediatric objectives are included.
3. Other Courses
The second year of the Determinants of Community Health (DOCH) course is entitled Researching Health in the Community. DOCH-2 has two core components: learning and demonstrating core research methods competencies and completion of each student's own research project. This course is a unique opportunity to demonstrate independent skills, reflection, and collaboration. Many students choose to pursue a project in Paediatrics.
B. Clerkship Curriculum in Paediatrics
1. Third Year Clerkship in Paediatrics
Clerkship in Paediatrics is a six week course during which students are placed at SickKids (ward or ER) for 3 weeks and a community practice for 3 weeks or at a community hospital for 6 weeks. There are core seminars and teaching scheduled throughout the period at SickKids.
The goal of this third year course is to promote greater professional self-awareness, as students enter the clinical world, specifically related to the six non-Medical Expert CanMEDS roles of Collaborator, Communicator, Manager, Health Advocate, Scholar, and Professional, using the specific skill of reflection. Paediatricians participate as Scholars and Junior Scholars in this course.3. Electives
Approximately 2000 Canadian and foreign elective students are accommodated for all types of experiences in the Department of Paediatrics each year. All divisions offer elective opportunities. All elective applications are processed by the electives office in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
