Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology
Dr. Shinya Ito- Division Head
The Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology focuses on all aspects of drug use and chemical exposure by the foetus, neonate and child. Our clinical services, educational program and research efforts range from optimal drug use, adverse drug reaction, poisoning, therapeutic drug monitoring and mechanisms of drug action. Being one of very few world-wide, this is the primary international training centre for paediatricians in paediatric therapeutics. In addition, our division is one of the two major training sites of the University of Toronto Clinical Pharmacology Residency/Fellowship Program, accepting trainees not only from Paediatrics, but also from Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry and Anaesthesia. The division maintains a large number of cross-links with other divisions in Paediatrics.
Established in 1978, the division is the only free-standing program in any Canadian paediatric hospital and one of very few in North America. While the original focus of the division was research and leadership in drug use, a number of clinical services were put into place in the 1980s. As one of the biggest training centers for Clinical Pharmacology, during the last five years we have trained over 30 physicians from 15 countries in Paediatric and Developmental Therapeutics.
